Portia Monique’s Releases Snippet of Debut CD

Portia Monique’s Releases Snippet of Debut CD

Portia Monique was born to sing. As a three-year-old she was performing at the mirror, by seven was signing in church, and by nine was writing snappy lyrics to further hone her talent. Self taught, musical studies haven’t followed, but an increasingly impactful series of collaborations with other artists and producers has certainly provided Portia with the needed learning experiences to grow. You’d be forgiven for thinking that heavyweight musical family helped determine her path and yet Portia Monique’s sweet song was entirely from within. “My mother can sing, but she never took it any further than the home” she reflects. Born to sing indeed…

Born in Hawaii before moving to Seattle – her home today – and lived Houston, TX for 7 years, Portia traveled a lot during her formative years and with that, she carried a portable tape recorder everywhere she could, in order to capture every idea that graced her creative mind. Near the age of 16 (one year after arriving to Houston, TX), she started working with a variety of local music producers and rappers to hone her craft and build her music network. As the collaborations with the various artists were short lived, Portia continued to work solo and perfect her craft. While doing so, she successfully posted demos via key social networks like MySpace and other social media outlets. Portia then caught the attention of Seattle based and well know music producer “Illoquint”. Near the age of 23, Portia relocated back the Seattle, WA to pursue a working relationship with the Seattle base producer, and musical magic was made.

Portia’s relentless online momentum and creative music production by “Illoquint” and a few others, built upon a beautifully unique voice that blends hip-hop bite with velvety soul via dazzlingly complex harmonies, snazzy, jazzy tricks and some seriously insightful lyrical craft, brought her to the attention of kingpin US R&B producers Rodney Jerkins (Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Mary J Blige), Kyle West (LL Cool J) and Midi Mafia (Brandy, Talib Kweli, Frank Ocean), as well as, across the Pond, Reel People Music’s Oli Lazarus.

Portia met Oli Lazarus from Reel People Music in 2011, they clicked instantly and timeless music was born. The relationship has opened her up to a brand new avenue of soulful opportunity, which she has exploited to full and glorious effect. Her work with The Layabouts on Reel People Music, has garnered hit underground dance floor singles Do Better, Tell Me Now and the utterly uplifting Bring Me Joy (all of which featured on the super-stylish soul-house duo’s 2012 album Future Retro) and, right now, new outing Colours Of Love – a deep, emotive swell of 4-4 vocal perfection. The combination of expressive vocals, tight song-writing and fluid production is totally knockout.

All of which bodes well for 2014 when Portia Monique’s debut album, produced by Reel People, will finally land. “It’s a fusion of goodness,” she teases. “It’s soulful yet has a smart commercial appeal”. The record draws on many of my life experiences, and that’s what makes music real.”
She continues: “Embarrassingly I knew nothing about House music before I began working with Oli and The Layabouts. It’s a different, exciting sound but ultimately music is music, and my sound is my sound – it cuts across everything I do. That comes across on the album despite its mix of different sounds.”
Portia is also gearing up to tour, stage appearances in South Africa, and has lived and travelled South East Asia over the past 24 months, consolidating her status today as consummate all round performer and promising to make 2014 and many years to come, the defining year of her career. Check out the latest from this talented singer. Enjoy!

PRINCE ANNOUNCES TWO BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUMS

PRINCE ANNOUNCES TWO BRAND NEW STUDIO ALBUMS

princeMusic icon PRINCE today announces not one, but two, brand new studio albums to be released globally via Warner Bros. Records. The much-anticipated albums are ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ and ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM‘, set to release on September 30th 2014 in the US. ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ is a solo album and ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM‘ is by Prince’s new band 3RDEYEGIRL.

Both albums, which are sold separately, are now available for pre-order via digital retailers and from http://www.artofficialage.com. Early buyers will be able to unlock ‘instant grat’ tracks from each record. The album releases will also be marked by a series of very special events taking place globally, to be confirmed shortly.

2014 has been one of the most exciting years yet for the prodigious musical talent. Together with 3RDEYEGIRL, he rocked UK and European audiences into a frenzy with his sell-out ‘Hit & Run’ tours, generating some of the most significant critical acclaim of his career so far. In April, NPG Music Publishing was launched, marking the first time Prince’s vast publishing catalog has been independently controlled and administered in over twenty years. All of this in addition to headlining and curating the Essence Festival on July 4th in New Orleans and a much talked about appearance on hit TV show ‘New Girl’. 2014 has underlined that Prince continues to innovate and surprise, thrilling his fans and welcoming a whole new audience in the process.

The brand new studio albums mark a historic return to Warner Bros. Records, Prince’s original label home. The renewed partnership came after the announcement that Warner Bros. Records returned to Prince the master recordings of his pioneering ’80s albums, including Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign ‘O’ the Times.

“Prince is one of just a handful of visionary artists who have truly reshaped and redefined modern music and culture,” said Warner Bros. Records Chairman & CEO Cameron Strang. “For the past 35 years, he has never stopped evolving, challenging himself, reinventing his sound, and pushing boundaries. In true Prince fashion, he has just given us not one, but two extraordinary albums that express the incredible range and depth of his talent. All of us at WBR are immensely proud to be working with Prince to bring this brilliant new music to his legions of fans around the world, and needless to say we are thrilled to be working in partnership with him again.”

In releasing two albums on the same day fans get the chance to savor the many different aspects of Prince’s musical talents with ‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ and ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM’ offering two very distinct listening experiences.

‘ART OFFICIAL AGE’ is a classic Prince album, produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince and Joshua Welton (@joshuaworld). Sonically the record is a contemporary concoction of soul, R&B and funk. The melodies are immediate and prominent as ever and Prince’s vocals are rich and solid, taking full advantage of his vocal range with decidedly, seductive lyrics.

‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM‘ is a classic band record, with 3RDEYEGIRL which include Prince, Donna Grantis (guitar), Hannah Ford Welton (drums) and Ida Nielsen (bass). Recorded live and in analog the album is an electrifying funk-rock statement. Many of the tracks from ‘PLECTRUMELECTRUM’ were performed live on the ‘Hit & Run’ tours of the UK earlier this year – incendiary performances in a series of historic venues – which led The Guardian to declare “These are performances by one of the greatest funk-rock bands ever.” The group was showered in 5-star reviews from all major reviewing media

Brayton Bowman – Jaywalk

Brayton Bowman – Jaywalk

LYRICS:

Who says that i
i don’t deserve to move on
lemme catch my breath
who says that my
first love was the last one
last one i’d ever get
i thought we had something worth forever
well looks like i was wrong
cause i’m stuck smoking on the rest of together
i been gettin high just to get by
ever since you left wrong turnt right for me
now i can see tomorrow chillin across the street

sometimes you got to jaywalk
when you can’t wait to be okay
you got to jaywalk
if you can’t let go of yesterday
you better jaywalk
you can’t keep waiting on a light to change
strut your shit and pound the pavement
it’s time to jaywalk

it took me six whole months worth of blunts
to get the taste of you
the taste of you off my tongue
and it was hard to
convince myself to stop holding on
and let go of my first love
i’m sorry if my pride and i were latched on too tightly
to what we were
but you sent me flying, trippin
when you kicked me to the curb
been here gettin high just to get by
ever since you left wrong turnt right for me
now i can see tomorrow chillin across the street

sometimes you got to jaywalk
when you can’t wait to be okay
you got to jaywalk
if you can’t let go of yesterday
you better jaywalk
you can’t keep waiting on a light to change
strut your shit and pound the pavement
it’s time to jaywalk

if you take two steps forward and one step back
then you’re still moving forward
no you can’t look back
if you take two steps forward and one step back
then you’re still moving forward
so you better not look back

you got to jaywalk
when you can’t wait to be okay
you got to jaywalk
if you can’t let go of yesterday
you better jaywalk
you can’t keep waiting on a light to change
strut your shit and pound the pavement
it’s time to jaywalk
when you can’t wait to be okay
you got to jaywalk
if you can’t let go of yesterday
you better jaywalk
you can’t keep waiting on a light to change
strut your shit and pound the pavement
it’s time to jaywalk
