Live Your Fantasy!

My favorite group of all time is Earth, Wind & Fire, and like many music lovers, I was saddened by the news of founder Maurice White’s death.  Take a second to remember the tremendous legacy this group has created:

  • Won 6 Grammys, nominated 20x
  • Won 4 American Music Awards,nominated 12x
  • Sold over 90 Million records worldwide
  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
  • Songwriters Hall of Fame
  • Numerous Lifetime Achievement Awards
  • Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

While bumpin’ my EWF music collection one day, one of the most powerful songs I believe ever written started to play: “Fantasy” from the All N’ All album released in 1978 (triple platinum btw).  I can’t think of another song that so profoundly depicts the experience of living a dream like this song does.

“Every man has a place, in his heart there’s a space, and the world can’t erase his fantasies.”

#Truth!  Each one of us is born with the ability to dream.  Although the trials of life often stifle our ability to dream, this special ability can never be erased.  Dreams are God’s gift to you and me that gives us the ability to step out of common thinking and into a world of new possibilities.  Through our dreams (or “fantasies”) we have the power to completely transform our life or circumstances.

Listening to Fantasy is like taking a journey.  From the pulsating bass & drums, to those signature EW&F horn rifts, to Phil Bailey’s flying falsetto at the end….just hearing this song makes me feel like I’m supposed to be dreaming and thinking bigger!  That’s exactly what they represented as a band, something too great to fit into someone’s box.  They made soul, jazz, funk, disco, gospel, rock, pop and R&B.  True freedom is living out of your imagination, and letting the highest expression of your talents and gifts be realized.

“Come to see victory, in a land called fantasy…. Loving life, a new degree, Bring your mind to everlasting liberty.”

I’m so grateful for EW&F whose music transcends genre, race, religion and time.  I’m grateful for Maurice White for being a visionary who used his gifts to enlighten hearts & minds, and for being an example of what we should do with our time on earth: being a shining light in the world that helps others break free from the ordinary to do something extraordinary.
