NSC Spotlight: DJ Frances Jaye’s Headspace Vol. 1
by Darrien Devaughn
Long overdue for Neo Soul Cafe fans, DJ Frances Jaye brings us HEAD SPACE VOL. 1 Compilation as part of her underground independent artists compilation series that soul heads can appreciate and groove to at any time, whether you bought the physical CD or have a digital download. She begins with a greeting to get you ready to enjoy the featured 11 tracks she presents on her album. She then opens Vol. 1 with one of the biggest names on the album, Valvin Roane, also known as V, who is mostly recognized from the song BORN AGAIN featuring Jill Scott. His song LIFT OFF will have you singing “Hurry up now…” as he delivers a head bobbing track that you will want to listen to repeatedly. Dallas native, Miracle Foster, utters to someone how time was wasted as she explains on I DON’T LOVE YOU. LAST CLOSE UP, also featuring Erron Lee, is Deonis’ late 90’s free-feeling track that can be listened to over and over again as ECSTASY did on his album, THE BREAKING POINT. Having seen her in person, Maleke O’Nay, can bring any crowd to it’s feet with her high energy and Badu-ish style. On BEAUTIFUL SIDE OF LOVE, she explains that feeling of just how good love can be. Next up, New York native, Darien Dean, speaks of heartbreak on the hypnotic track UR THE ONE in which he makes it clear that “love without no trust” is a major reason for the demise of many relationships. Local Dallas artist, Kierion Johnson’s OFF YOUR THRONE is beautifully written with a guitar rip that will have you revisiting the track all over again before delving into Lawyer Turner, another talented Dallas singer, who blows the doors off of US. If I had to pick a favorite joint off the album, it would definitely go to California singer, Porshe Smith’s ALL THE MANY WAYS as she tells us how she wants to talk to a guy who speaks french to her and is blushingly dumbfounded by his accent. Now if you’ve ever checked out Amanda Maxfield on YouTube and seen her gospel videos, you know the girl can sang..but on JUST BETTER she completely blows your mind with her Jazmine Sullivan type range telling of how her love is simply put, better. Capitol Records recording artist and Los Angeles based soul singer, Steve Frazier, gives us a blended coffee house vibe on I WONDER. Rounding out the Vol. 1 compilation is the beautiful and talented Dallas based singer, Blythe Dennis, as she brings her sultry voice to the girls trip anthem FOR THE WEEKEND. I love how everytime I hear the beginning, it has a Young and the Restless piano-type feel to it. DJ Frances Jaye has secured some young and insanely talented artists and blended them together to form this album that is a sure fire, can’t miss treasure. The amount of support and love her audience and the masses have shown her with this project is beautiful leaving us all waiting for Headspace Volume 2.
