NSC Spotlight Artist: Rudy Currence
by Darrien DeVaughn
Innovative, Refreshing, classic and humble are words that can best describe Rudy Currence. The son of a pastor who grew up in Rock Hill, S.C, Rudy grew up in the church and eventually got his degree in music from Furman University. Getting into the music industry was a blessing for him because he has written and produced for the likes of Quincy Jones, Mya, Ray J, David Banner and Karen Clark Sheard. He also was credited with a song in The Bourne Identity featuring Matt Damon. An even bigger accomplishment was winning a Grammy and a Dove award for writing the lyrics for Lecraes’ GRAVITY. All the while being endorsed by Kawai Piano’s, he has a series of cover song viral video’s under the name, The Kawai Kronicles. He has 3 albums to his credit: 2003’s More Than You’ll Ever Know, 2009’s Last Christmas and 2016’s Digital Analog 2.0. One of my favorite songs is GoodBye Felicia, which he surrenders his soulful voice over Bilal’s SOUL SISTA beat. Overall Rudy says eventually he wants to “leave a legacy through song.” Well sir, you are well on your way.
