NSC Spotlight Artist: Darien Dean
by Darrien Devaughn
Singer, MC, Songwriter, Producer, Dancer and Engineer, Darien Dean, is the antithesis of a one trick pony. When he is on stage his mere presence is one of the best in not only his genre but of all peers in the industry. Born in Mount Vernon, NY, Dean, who has always been a fan of Stevie Wonder and is the one person he would love to do a song with, was born a natural entertainer. His early compilations, features and various singles gained him a following of fans internationally. His first album IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK spawned his hit COMPOSURE, which was voted by fans of JazzandSoul.eu, track of the year and Soultracks.com had him as their New Artist of the Year in 2009. Dean has many other accolades such as winning the 2010 Budweiser Superfest Battle of the Crown of New York, receiving international recognition of his hit single ALIBI, opening up for Mary J. Blige at the 2010 Soul Beach Music Festival and touring in Japan with Angela Johnson. In May of this year he released DEPARTURES, which is the first of a trilogy of albums entitled NOTES FROM THE JOURNEY. The finger snapping SOMEONE IS YOU featuring Avery Sunshine is a delight to enjoy anywhere and a favorite of mine. Darien believes that there is so much more to talk about than love or parties and his case will become more evident as he releases the remaining albums from the trilogy. He describes his sound as “Storytelling Soul” and when he deals with any topic in his music, he tries to take a different approach than the norm. Refreshing I’d say.
