NSC Spotlight Artist: Chris Turner
by Darrien DeVaughn
Weirdo, hipster, soul musician Chris Turner is a “Lover”. That’s how the 32 year old independent artist describes himself in interviews. Born and raised in Oakland, CA, Chris knew he wanted to be a singer at age 4. Raised in the church and being the son of a musician, he went wherever his dad went when he traveled city to city playing in local clubs. At age 9, he performed with the San Francisco Opera Company and after high school he was the featured vocalist for the San Francisco High School All Stars as they performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock and Wynton Marsailis. Well known as a modern day Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, his voice impersonates a beautiful falsetto and he can scat with the best of them in either a soul or jazz environment. Chris has toured with the likes of Bilal, Gwen Stefani, Chris Brown and Esperanza Spalding. He has to his credit a mixtape called LOVELIFE, IS A CHALLENGE and CHRIS TURNER LIVE IN NY VOL.1. He is currently working on his own EP called LOVECHILD and is featured on Snarky Puppy’s 2016 Family Dinner Two for a rework of his 2010 hit LIQUID LOVE. You can find his songs Best of Your Heart and But Beautiful on SoundCloud and YouTube and a lot of his cover songs. Mr. Turner is also a member of The Romantic Movement, a group of guys with good intentions toward being modern day gentlemen. “I’m a lover from Oakland, CA who ended up in NY. I’m a lot of different things and sometimes I battle with what I am first, a father. Chris Turner is a cool cat who will eventually be a household name.
