NSC Spotlight Artist: Ashleigh Smith
by Darrien DeVaughn
27 year old jazz/soul artist, Ashleigh Smith, may have already done more in her lifetime than most people do in theirs. Spending 5 years singing backup to Chrisette Michele, winning the 2014 Sarah Vaughn International Jazz Vocals competition and releasing an album to the masses earlier this year. Graduating from the University of North Texas in 2013, the Dallas native hooked up with a couple friends from school, Nigel Rivers and Joel Cross, and began putting out cover songs to gain some recognition. Her 9 song EP entitled LET ME GO pales in comparison to her recently released SUNKISSED album. LET ME GO was her introduction to the music industry as it was upbeat, gritty and served its purpose of getting her a following. Ms. Michele heard about her through the grapevine and decided to help her sign a deal with Concord Music. SUNKISSED and its lead single “Best Friends” brings her jazzy voice to life. My favorite “Blackbird” is such a Sunday afternoon tune it almost should be labeled just that. NeoSoul family may I introduce my fellow Dallasite, Ashleigh Smith.
